GCRB Public and Patient (or Lay) Representative

Tuesday, 8th November 2016

The Genetic Counsellor Registration Board (GCRB) wishes to appoint one new member as Public and Patient Representative onto its Board.

The purpose of the GCRB is to establish, maintain and improve standards of genetic counselling practice to assure public safety within the UK. The GCRB is a small but emerging organisation with just under 200 Registered Genetic Counsellors. The GCRB was accredited by the Professional Standard Authority in May 2016. Most genetic counsellors work within the NHS in Regional Genetic Centres, seeing patients with a genetic condition or with a family history of one.

We are looking for one person who has a broad interest in genetics and genetic counselling, who will help to contribute from the public and patient perspective to the GCRB. This is a new role developed to extend the voice of the patient, or lay person, in the work of the Board, joining the existing representative from Genetic Alliance UK.

The successful applicant will be appointed initially for a period of three years, renewable up to a maximum of 6 years. They will be required to attend meetings of the Board in London twice a year, for two consecutive days in January and on one day in June. The Public and Patient Representative will be able to speak and have full voting rights at Board meetings. Induction support will be provided. Previously agreed travel expenses can be claimed for attendance at Board meetings, and the Representative will be paid £75 per half day for attendance.

For further details about the GCRB please look at the other sections of our webiste.

If you want to discuss your interest, please contact Diana Scotcher of the GCRB by email diana.scotcher@cmft.nhs.uk or by phone 0161 276 6285.

To apply please send a CV with details of two people willing to provide a reference, and a covering letter outlining your interest in genetic counselling the role of the Public and Patient Representative, to enquiries@GCRB.org.uk.

The closing date for applications is Friday 18th November 2016, and the interviews will be on Monday 28th November in the afternoon at Guy’s Hospital, London.
